Projects

Nanotechniques let us “see” at the molecular scale so we can understand how fluids interact with solids in nature. Our projects cover a wide range of topics, which you can find here.

Often what we learn in one project provide helps us understand  chemical and physical processes in others. For example, from projects sponsored by oil companies, we have learned how organic material sticks to mineral surfaces, which helps us develop better ways to remove pesticides and toxic chlorinated solvents from drinking water aquifers. The new understanding has also shed light on how organisms control growth of shells, using organic compounds. What we learned about making better reactive barriers for waste disposal helped us answer questions for the aviation authorities about the danger of ash particles when Ejyafjallajökull volcano erupted, closing European airspace. What we now understand about converting CO2 to stable solids is helping to design more effective insulation for houses.

Our funding comes from the European Commission (EC) for Science, from the private sector, from government agencies and foundations in Denmark and the UK. We have a passion for finding out how nature works, discovering new fundamental relationships and we thoroughly enjoy finding practical solutions to real problems with industry.
