Welcome to Metal-Aid

METAL-AID is a European Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) designed to address the problem of contaminated water sites across Europe. The project is coordinated by University of Copenhagen and involves 11 different beneficiaries throughout Europe. The project starts on July 1, 2016 and runs for four years.  Over the course of the project, Metal-Aid will train 14 Early Stage Researchers.

 

LARGE SCALE PUBLIC OUTREACH EVENT

Metal-Aid ESRs and PIs participated in a large scale public outreach event in Iceland in September 2018.  As part of the event, ESRs presented their work to the public and to other European networks and researchers. METAL-AID MID-TERM REVIEW

The Metal-Aid mid-term review took place in Giardini Naxos, Sicily on the afternoon of May 7, 2018 and the morning of May 8, 2018.  The MTR was associated with a network-wide training event.  A schedule for the meeting is available here.

THIRD METAL-AID NETWORK EVENT

The third Metal-Aid Network event took place from November 26-December 1, 2017 in Kaprun, Austria. This event revolved around fluid flow characterisation, modelling and scientific writing. METAL-AID OUTREACH POSTER

ESR Flavia Digiacomo (Arcadis) worked with other ESRs involved in the Metal-Aid project to create a poster about the Metal-Aid research program, the institutes involved, the various work packages and the objectives of the ESR research projects. SECOND METAL-AID NETWORK EVENT

The second Metal-Aid Network event took place from May 14-19, 2017 in Denmark. This event entitled "Field methods and their applications, an industry perspective on the Metal-Aid project" provided ESRs with concrete training in field contamination delineation and site remediation technologies. About Metal-Aid

Thousands of sites across Europe are polluted with toxic metals and organic solvents; many more exist worldwide.As EU population grows, clean water will determine the quality of life and economic stability. Most sites remain contaminated because existing technology is costly and disruptive. Society needs an innovative way to decontaminate soil and groundwater directly underground.

In METAL-AID, we will develop new technologies through fundamental knowledge. We are a partnership of 6 universities, 4 consulting companies and a government agency, from Denmark, Germany, Britain, Spain and Iceland. Our goal is to develop a new method for remediating contaminated soil and groundwater, in situ, so the activities on the land surface, such as houses, schools and businesses are not disturbed.

Active Field Sites

 

The target contaminant types are organic solvents and heavy metals. Research will investigate currently available products and develop new ones, characterise their physical and chemical properties and behaviour, test their effectiveness in laboratory, column and field experiments, compare their behaviour with natural analogues and inject them into a contaminated site and monitor their effectiveness.

Approaches for gathering data will include high tech techniques that can "see" at the nanometre scale, macroscopic experiments, molecular modelling, thermodynamic, kinetic and fluid flow experiments and modelling, field site characterisation, pilot scale injection studies and monitoring of the effectiveness of the reacting material over time.

The senior scientists and engineers and their teams, that will serve as hosts for the PhD fellows, are experts in their fields and the laboratory and field equipment to be deployed is state of the art, including instruments and techniques that have been designed and built by project partners.

The overall aim of the European Commission's ITN projects is to train early stage researchers (ESRs) to provide a highly competent workforce for the future of the European Union. Through hands-on activities, with experts at the host organisation, and the opportunity for secondments with other project partners, the Metal-Aid project will train: 14 PhD FellowsFor individual research tasks that are linked together to contribute to the general, overall project goals.

To meet the METAL-AID goals, the ESRs will:
1)Test known layered double hydroxide (LDH) and redox active green rust (GR) reactants that show promise forremediating toxic metals and chlorinated compounds and invent new ones;
2) Derive thermodynamic and kineticdata, essential for safety assessment modelling;
3) Quantify reactant effectiveness and reacted phase stability andcompare these with natural analogues;
4) Inject the new reactants at field sites operated by our beneficiaries.

METAL-AID begins at technology readiness level, TRL 1 and runs to TRL 6, implementation. The government agency will provide guidance so our new technology complies with regulations and has promised R&D funding after the ETN ends, to carry it into full commercialisation. The ESRs will be trained to tackle challenges of concern to society, to communicate across sector boundaries and with the public, in a network that will last long after the project ends. We will provide a pool of scientists for roles in EU's knowledge based economy.

Management

Top level METAL-AID communication with the European Commission will be handled by the Executive Body (EB), which includes Project Coordinator Stipp (KU), Co-coordinator Tobler (KU), Academic Deputy Coordinators Oelkers (UCL) and Benning (GFZ) and Coordinators from two main non-academic partners. The Project Manager assists the coordinator in all aspects of the project.

Management meetings will be held at network-wide training events and the minutes from the meetings will be posted here.

Sixth Metal-Aid management meeting: Reykjavik, Iceland, September 11, 2018

The sixth Metal-Aid management meeting was held during the International Carbon Conference 2018  large scale outreach event whch brought together 5 different networks.  While the ESRs were receiving field training, the PIs met to discuss the recently submitted periodic report and progress to date across the network.

The meeting opened with a discussion about the periodic report and the upcoming interim payment from the European Commission.  Beneficiaries asked for more details about the  various payments sent by the European Commission and when they are received.  Beneficiaries were reminded about the deliverables due to the commission and the group revisited the list of deliverables and milestones defined in the grant agreement to ensure that progress was on target to reach all the originlly defined objectives.  The group also discussed the situation with ESR 4, currently on sick leave, and how this impacts the project.

The discussion next moved to a planning session for the remaining training courses and network events to be offered to the ESRs.  By the end of the project, all training promised will have been delivered.  Beneficiaries were asked to remind their ESRs to continue with their outreach efforts and to acknowledge EC funding on all publications.

The meeting concluded with a discussion of the final injection phase of Metal-Aid.  It was suggested that this could be combined with an outreach event.  Possibilities for various types of injections were discussed with injections likely to take place in Spring 2019.

At this point, the group broke into smaller subsets to discuss progress to date in each of the work packages.

Fifth Metal-Aid management meeting:   Giardini Naxos, Sicily, May 7, 2018

This Metal-Aid management meeting concentrated on preparation of the periodic report to be submitted to the European Commission at the end of the first reporting period on August 31, 2018.  Malene Roost Lytsen from the European Office at KU gave a presentation to all beneficiaries about how to prepare the financial reports on the participant portal including how to set up an FSIGN for those beneficiaries who have not yet done so.  She also reviewed the various budget categories and the types of documentation to be kept to justify spending in each category.  Malene's presentation was distributed to all beneficiaries.

Fourth Metal-Aid management meeting:   Kaprun, Austria, November 27, 2017

The management meeting opened with a review of training courses offered at network events to date and their associated costs. Much of the promised training has already been provided to the ESRs and they were encouraged to send any specific requests for future training events to Clare. The coordinator asked the ESRs if they would be interested in a career training event involving mock interviews for positions in both academia and industry and the response was positive to this proposal. PI Fidel Grandia from Amphos 21 provided information about a training course in 1D modelling to the ESRs. This course will take place in the spring of 2018 in Italy and Fidel will send the information to Clare for posting to the website. Approximately one third of the budget originally allocated for network wide training events has been consumed to date. The next planned training event will take place in Taormina, Sicily in May 2018 and will be associated with the Metal-Aid mid-term review.

Following the mid-term review, the Metal-Aid network will participate in a large scale international outreach event in Iceland in September 2018. This event will bring together a minimum of four networks, will be open to the general public and will provide opportunities for the ESR to present their work to both specialists and non-specialists. The tentative title for the meeting is “Science for a cleaner environment.” In addition to participation in the outreach event, ESRs will have the opportunity to take part in a training course in sampling techniques. Clare raised the question of how many network events to organise after the event in Iceland, but it was agreed to revisit this issue later when we have a better idea of how the research projects are progressing and where and when injections will take place in the field.

After a discussion of the network event budget including a question and answer session, Clare provided some reminders to the ESRs about their obligations. These included: - Carrying out their originally planned secondments or contacting Clare with any proposed changes so that she can request permission from the project officer - Writing a paragraph about their experience on secondment for posting to the project website - Continuing to engage in outreach activities with the general public and documenting these events through photos and information to be sent to Clare for posting to the project website
- Complying with the obligation to make any peer reviewed publications open access and acknowledging European funding on all publications
- Providing specific information to Clare on progress reports re. titles, dois, page numbers etc for any publications produced
- Requesting permission from their supervisors BEFORE registering for non-network training courses
- Getting in touch with the project manager and/or project coordinator should the ESRs wish to discuss any concerns or problems they encounter at their host/secondment institutes.

ESRs and PIs were also encouraged to send Clare information about any training events or conferences of potential interest to the group to be posted to the project website. Clare next presented some slides about the mid-term review. She provided information on what to expect:
- When and where the event will take place - who will attend from the European commission and from the network
- what ESRs will present and how they should prepare
- the general agenda for the two half days
- the mid-term report to be submitted one month prior to the event

To facilitate preparation of the mid-term report, Clare will modify the network progress report template to include a section for PIs to provide feedback on individual project progress and to ask both ESRs and PIs to tie their projects to the bigger picture behind the Metal-Aid network. The next network progress report should be returned to Clare by March 1 at the latest to allow time to prepare the mid-term report.

The meeting concluded with an open forum for questions and discussion.

Third Metal-Aid management meeting: Copenhagen, Denmark.  May 15, 2017

The third Metal-Aid management meeting was held during the network event which took place in Copenhagen from May 14-19, 2017. The theme of the network event was “Field methods and their applications, an industry perspective on the Metal-Aid project.” The meeting started with a discussion of project finances including a reminder about how the costs of network events are handled by the University of Copenhagen. A portion of the original Research Training allowance was held back at University of Copenhagen and is used to cover the costs of accommodations and subsistence for the beneficiaries at network events. When external participants attend, their costs are invoiced directly to their host institutes.

A question was next raised about the costs of sending fellows on secondment. All PIs and ESRs were reminded that secondments are an integral part of the fellows’ research experience and that it is obligatory for all ESRs to spend time on secondment. While on secondment, costs of accommodations and transportation to the secondary host institute are covered by the primary host. However, subsistence is covered by the fellows themselves. In the event that there are exceptional costs raised while a fellow is on secondment (i.e. extremely expensive analyses, for example), an agreement should be made between the primary host and the secondary host before the fellow goes on secondment to agree on how these costs should be covered. All fellows and PIs were also reminded that a good research plan for the intended secondment needs to be established between the involved parties in good time before the student embarks on a secondment, to ensure maximum outcome. Following the secondment, the students should write a short paragraph about their secondment experience to be posted to the project website.

The project manager, Clare Desplats, next reminded beneficiaries about the first progress report due to the European Commission this summer. She explained the various parts of the report: general progress of the action, recruitment strategy, career development plans for each researcher, management, communication and impact of the action. All beneficiaries were asked to confirm the number of applications received at their institute for each ESR position. ESRs were reminded that the information that they provide in their bi-annual progress reports will serve to complete the progress report submitted on the participant portal.

The meeting next moved to a discussion of the mid-term review. The project manager reminded everyone that the mid-term review is a contractual obligation and should be attended by all ESRs and PIs. It was agreed that the mid-term review should take place approximately six months after the next network event to be held in Austria in November 2017. This would mean that the mid-term review would be scheduled at around month 22 or month 23 of the project. Clare will set up a doodle poll to check availability of all PIs and will then contact the project officer to ask if the dates and location are also convenient for the REA.

The group next reviewed the list of deliverables defined in the Grant Agreement, particularly those related to training of the ESRs. So far the project is well on track to meet the original milestones and deliverables, but there are still two ESR positions open which should be filled before the end of the first year. ESRs have started to engage in public outreach activities and these are regularly posted to the website by the project manager. All beneficiaries were reminded about the obligation to make any peer reviewed publications accessible via Open Access.  This portion of the meeting served as the annual self-evaluation of the project.

Second Metal-Aid management meeting: Madeira, Portugal. November 30, 2016

The Metal-Aid management meeting was open to all PIs and ESRs and began with a review of contractual obligations as defined in the Grant Agreement. Beneficiaries were reminded that they must submit researcher declarations for their recruited fellows within 20 days of the start date of the ESR employment contract. Some beneficiaries have already done this whereas others have not because their fellows have either just started or will start in the following months. Beneficiaries were asked to provide personal email addresses for the fellows to facilitate contact with the European Commission after their employment contracts have ended. The project manager, Clare Desplats, has sent a copy of the Grant Agreement to all recruited fellows. ESRs were also informed that they must complete a Personal Career Development plan which will be returned to the project manager and forwarded to the Metal-Aid project officer.

The meeting next moved to a discussion of project finances. In order to negotiate better rates for group bookings for network events, a portion of the Research Training budget was held back at University of Copenhagen. This budget will be used to cover the costs of accommodations and subsistence for PIs and ESRs during Metal-Aid network events. In the event that external participants attend network events, they will be invoiced for their participation after the event. Clare answered questions from the beneficiaries about the various budget categories (Living, Mobility, Research Training and Management +Overheads) including how to report spending in non-euro currencies. All beneficiaries were reminded that the first financial report for the project will be due after month 24 (July 2018). The European Office at University of Copenhagen and the project manager will provide assistance to the beneficiaries for completing the financial reports.

After reviewing project finances, the meeting next addressed the H2020 obligation of Open Access for peer reviewed publications. In FP7 projects, Open Access was recommended but in H2020 it has become an obligation so both ESRs and PIs were made aware of this change. ESRs and PIs were also encouraged to document collaboration across the network via joint publications. All participants were reminded about the need to acknowledge EC funding on any publications produced by the network. The project manager has sent everyone the sentence to be used for acknowledgements.

Beneficiaries and ESRs were also reminded about the contractual obligation to spend time on secondment and to perform public outreach activities. Both secondments and public outreach activities will be documented by the project manager on the dedicated Metal-Aid website. All participants were also reminded that their attendance is obligatory at the mid-term review. The latest possible date for the review is August 2018 but it was agreed that the review would probably take place a little earlier to avoid conflict with other conferences which take place at that time (i.e. Goldschmidt 2018). There were questions from the PIs and ESRs about what typically happens at the mid-term review.

In order to document the training, research, secondment and outreach activities being done by the ESRs, it was agreed that the project manager would develop a progress report template to be completed semi-annually by the ESRs and signed by their supervisors. These reports will also be used by the project manager and project coordinator to complete the annual progress reports to be submitted to the European Commission via the participant portal. All participants agreed that future management meetings will be a good opportunity to review the contractual obligations of the various network participants to ensure that all milestones and deliverables are met. Participants also discussed how these deliverables and milestones should be reported. The meeting concluded with an open question and answer session including questions about dates and locations for future network meetings.

First Metal-Aid management meeting: Copenhagen, Denmark.  April 6 and 7, 2016.

The first Metal-Aid management meeting was held on April 6 and 7 2016 at the Nanoscience Center of University of Copenhagen to introduce all beneficiaries to the guidelines governing Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks.  The meeting was attended by both administrative and financial staff from the beneficiary institutes and scientific supervisors.

The meeting commenced with a description of the project consortium, an explanation of MSCA ITN projects, the number of fellows to be recruited, the official start and end dates of the project and the reports to be provided over the course of the project. Following a question and answer session, the meeting then moved to a detailed explanation of finances, covering all budget categories: Living, Mobility, Research Training and Management and Overheads.  Differences between FP7 and H2020 ITNs were highlighted and information about how to report finances on the participant portal was provided.  Information was also provided on local and national contact points for queries related to Marie Curie projects.  The financial presentation concluded with an explanation of the percentage of pre-financing received for the Metal-Aid ITN and the typical payment cycle for these projects.  This portion of the meeting was also followed by a question and answer session.

After reviewing project finances, the meeting then moved to an explanation of the recruitment strategy to be implemented for the Metal-Aid project.  Under H2020, the European commission has strongly emphasized the need for merit based, transparent recruitment policies.  A checklist produced by the European commission was provided to all present and was reviewed by the group.  A discussion then ensued about the best way to advertise the positions (i.e. a group advertisement on Euraxess.  It was agreed that all beneficiaries would produce individual job ads for their ESR positions and that links to these ads would be uploaded as soon as possible to a dedicated project website.  Next, participants were reminded about signficant points to be included on employment contracts with the newly recruited fellows and the obligation to fill in a declaration on the conformity on the participant portal within 20 days of the start date of the fellow's contract.  This portion of the meeting concluded with a question and answer session.

The meeting next moved to a discussion of the obligations of Marie Curie fellows to spend time on secondment and to perform outreach activities targeting the general public.  Beneficiaries were asked to remind fellows to acknowledge EC funding on any publications, posters, etc produced during their fellowships.  It was suggested that the fellows create a project logo during the first network meeting to encourage them to work together and to give them a sense of ownership in the network.  Next, copies of the original annex to the grant agreement were distributed to the partners and the beneficiaries reviewed together the various deliverables promised to the European Commission.  The group discussed possible dates and locations for the first network meeting to be held with all PIs and newly recruited ESRs and a tentative date of end of November 2016 was retained but will be revisited once all partners have a better idea of when their ESRs will officially start their projects.

Research interests Green rusts have the potential ability to uptake and remove contaminant elements from water. Their layered structure and composition, containing both iron (II) and iron (III), are the essential cause of its high reactivity. Redox potential can be used to reduce toxic trace metals such as Cr(VI) or As(V). Furthermore, as it precipitates from aqueous solution, Fe(II) cations might be exchanged with other divalent cations, such as Mg2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+. This remarkable features makes green rusts a potential “trap” for polluting metals. My aim is to get a better understanding of how these processes occur in nature and how we could take advantage of them.

Research interests Through computation, we may have a deeper understanding of mechanisms of chemical reactions. The combination of computation and experiment becomes more effective and attractive to investigate chemical reactions. My main work is using DFT methods to explain and verify the results obtained from experiments, to provide experimental ESRs with new ideas and guidance such as studying reaction mechanisms of injection materials (like layered double hydroxides and green rust) and contaminants, designing different reactions by changing the molecular structures, and designing new materials by modeling and calculation.

Research interests In general, I seek to promote the responsible and sustainable use of our natural resources, which includes remediation of contaminated sites and ensuring clean water supply. Having worked on an acid mine drainage site and having investigated the mineralogy and geochemical interrelations of a heavy metal [high field strength element (REE,Y, Zr, Nb, Ti, Th)] deposit during my studies, I am most interested in the (aqueous) geochemistry and mobility of heavy metals, fluid-mineral interactions, and phase transformation reactions. Therefore, with my research within this project focusing on experimental investigations on contaminant reduction, I aim to gain a detailed understanding of the geochemical behavior and reaction kinetics of the pollutants under green rust-based remediation in contaminated soils and waters.

Research interests Over the last years, I have become especially interested in the kinetics and thermodynamics driving reactions at the solid-liquid interface. I find these processes interesting because I feel they can provide us with an insight on why fluid-solid interactions take place in the first place. For me the challenge lies in linking these nanoscale processes to the behaviour of pollutants/compounds at a larger scale. Understanding the nature of liquid-fluid interaction allows for a better prediction on how pollutants/compounds move within the natural environment, making it a socially relevant research topic.

Job opportunities

The Metal-Aid network will train 14 Early Stage Researchers. The research projects are divided into four distinct yet collaborative work packages. To learn more about each ESR project, please see below.

There are no open positions in the network.

Requirements:

Your background can be in a quantitative science or engineering, in physics, chemistry, mineralogy, materials science, geochemistry, hydrogeology, engineering, mathematics or other - it does not matter - but we expect you to be competent with physics, chemistry and mathematics. An interest in materials and their interactions in nature is important.

No experience is required but keen interest and a drive for solving problems is essential as is enthusiasm for working in a team with scientists and engineers from other disciplines and other cultures. Facility with English and another language is required because it will be a broadly international environment and there will be considerable travel for meetings and secondments.

To fulfill the European Commission requirements for this position, the candidate must have, or soon have, a degree that permits him/her to enter a PhD program. This might be a Masters degree, a "diplome", an Honours Bachelor or 4 year Bachelor, or equivalent. The successful candidate must not have a PhD or more than 4 years research experience.

The ITN program was designed by the European Commission for Science (EC) to enhance mobility and training opportunities so one of the requirements is that young researchers be trained in another country than their own. Therefore, the candidate must not have lived for more than 12 months during the past 3 years in the country that will host him/her for the project, i.e. a candidate who has been studying in Germany during the Bachelor can be hosted by a partner in Spain but not in Germany.

All young researchers will be registered for a PhD program. Those employed by the private sector partners will be registered at the university of the closest academic project partner. The training program lasts 3 years. The positions will start in the summer and fall of 2016. In some cases, for a perfect candidate, there is a possibility to hold a position for a few months.

Outreach

Metal-Aid fellows will participate in several outreach activities open to the general public. Information about these activities will be posted here.

October 3-5, 2018 "I Jornada de Jóvenes Investigadores”.

During the first week of October, the doctorate program in Chemical Science and Technology of University of Salamanca organised a two day workshop called I Jornada de Jóvenes Investigadores”. The aim was to reunite the latest research results from different research groups to encourage the development of synergies between groups and to motivate new students to develop their careers in science. Current PhD students presented posters or short oral communications of their most recent and exciting results. The sessions gathered around 10-15 professors and 40-50 students, including PhD students, master students and final-year undergraduate students. During the poster sessions Karen Dietmann (ESR 2) and Virginia Alonso de Linaje (ESR 14) presented their most recent results from their PhD and the Metal-Aid project in general.

 

 

September 10-14, 2018: The International Carbon Conference 2018

The International Carbon Conference 2018 is a network conference held in Iceland. The conference is a joint outreach meeting between five networks: CarbFix, S4CE, Metal-Aid, Deep Carbon Observatory and CarbonSAFE.  For more information about the event: https://www.or.is/carbfix/ICC2018

June 11-15, 2018: Poster Presentation at the Mainz University Summer School “Investigating Solid-Liquid Interfaces – Complementary Theoretical and Experimental Approaches”

In June 2018, Andrew Thomas attended a summer school at Mainz University in Germany and gave a poster presentation detailing his research over the previous months. Both instructors and students at the summer school attended the poster session.

18 April 2018: Presentation at NIRAS

ESR Markus Reischer (NIRAS) gave a presentation to his colleagues at NIRAS from the environmental department and introduced in general the Metal-Aid project and his specific work with Optical Imaging Profiler. The presentation was also attended by colleagues from other NIRAS sites (e.g., Aarhus) via Skype. The presentation was recorded as video, to make it available to others interested in the topic. Because NIRAS already uses the Optical Imaging Profiler for some projects, Markus was able to provide helpful details about the capabilities of the Optical Imaging Profiler.

 

1 March 2017: Poster display at CRD Innovation Garage

ESR Adrian Schiefler has placed the Metal-Aid poster on display at the Innovation Garage of the Capital Region of Denmark.  Various stakeholders regularly visit the garage, view the poster and ask to learn more about Metal-Aid.

10 January 2018: Article on USAL website

ESR Virginia Alonso de Linaje (AECOM) created an article about the Metal-Aid network which was posted to the University of Salamanca's website here. Information about the project was also tweeted here.

November 21, 2017: Company presentation at Amphos 21 in Barcelona

In Nov. 2017, ESR Shikhar Nilabh (A21) presented his work at his office in Amphos 21.  He gave a 40 minutes talk to approximately 30 environmental consultants at the company. Focusing on the topic 'multi-phase fluid flow in porous and fractured media', he presented his research project and the initial results obtained over the span of one year. The talk garnered interesting questions and valuable suggestions which are relevant for his further research work.

 

October 2017: Metal-aid blog

ESR Markus Reischer (NIRAS) published an article on the Metal-Aid blog entitled: Field investigations and experimental work at a chlorinated solvent site in Langsele, Sweden.  The full article can be viewed here.

29th September 2017: Creation of a Metal-Aid outreach poster

ESR Flavia Digiacomo (Arcadis) worked with other ESRs involved in the Metal-Aid project to create a poster about the Metal-Aid research program, the institutes involved, the various work packages and the objectives of the ESR research projects. This poster can be used by ESRs when giving outreach talks and can be displayed at the host institutes. To view larger image, please click here.

19th September, 2017: "Tuesday Discussion" at Nanogeoscience Group, University of Copenhagen

ESR Weichao Sun (KU) gave a 20 min talk to approximately 20 researchers from various departments in the Nanogeoscience Group at University of Copenhagen about his research project and results over the past ten months, particularly as regards single-layer green rust. The talk was followed by questions and discussions and valuable questions and suggestions came out.  Some photos are provided below courtesy of Weichao.

 

 

 

26th June, 2017: Shelsi Middle School, Shandong Province China

ESR Weichao Sun (KU) went to his old middle school, Shelisi Middle School during his holidays. While there, he gave a presentation entitled “The Application of Chemistry in Daily Life." Around 150 teenagers from 7th grade attended the talk. The talk started with common chemical phenomena, like corrosion and Coca-Cola, to lead up to chemistry in daily life. Weichao spoke with students about what research life is like and showed them pictures from the Second Metal-Aid Network Meeting in Copenhagen. He also showed some personal pictures of himself and spoke about overseas cultures.  Some photos from the day are provided below courtesy of Weichao.

 

 

June 2017: Lange Nacht of Wissenschaft (Long night of science)

ESR Sandra Navaz Rubio participated in the event: The long night of science which took place at the GFZ at the end of June. It was the perfect opportunity to show people topics that the network is working on. Over the course of the evening, students performed crystallisation experiments in real time to explain how crystals nucleate and grow in nature and offered a short visit to the laboratories. The event was considerably crowded all night. Over a hundred people visited the GFZ, especially families with children and young people.

21 June 2017: Presentation to Remediate ITN

ESR Adrian Schiefler (CRD) gave a presentation to a group of ESRs and PIs involved in the Remediation ITN. Approximately 20 people attended. The network is also dealing with contamination/remediation but very different focuses lead to a vivid discussion including exchanges on DNAPL vs heavy metal contamination and means of sustainable remediation of these. Afterwards, Adrian accompanied the group on a joint field trip to a contaminated site (Collstrup), taking water samples for ESR7. 14 June 2017: Presentation to Urban Ecology group from Berlin

ESR Adrian Schiefler (CRD) gave a presentation to the Urban Ecology MSc group from the Technical University of Berlin about his research in the Metal-Aid project.  The group of approximately 25-30 people was hosted at the CRD Innovation Garage. The presentation focused on: Explaining more backgrounds about contamination and strategies to tackle them – technically and strategically as a public stakeholder. Explaining the approach of the Capital Region and how and why research and development programs like Metal Aid are important, how they are structured and how people benefit from them.

20 February 2017: High school visit by ESR Virginia Alonso de Linaje (AECOM/URS)

On 20 Feb. 2017, ESR Virginia Alonso de Linaje and her colleague, Arantxa Martinez from AECOM went to Colegio Sagrado Corazon in Madrid to give a talk about geology and jobs for geologists within a company like AECOM (e.g. soil remediation, engineer, ...).  Approximately 25 teenagers attended the talk and were able to examine rocks brought by Virginia and her colleague and to hear how they were formed.

16 January 2017: Presentation about Metal-Aid ITN by ESR Adrian Schiefler (CRD)

In January 2017, ESR Adrian Schiefler gave a presentation at Capital Region Denmark to the groundwater development team about the Metal-Aid ITN and about MSCA ITNs in general.  The talk was attended by about 10 people.  Later in January, Adrian presented another talk on the same subject at the Center for Regional Development which was attended by approximately 80 people. Secondments

Each Metal-Aid fellow go on secondment to one or more secondary host institutes. Updates from the fellows about their experiences while on secondments will be posted here.

ESR Andrew Thomas: KIT->Arcadis (February-June 2018)

Andrew Thomas spent 5 months splitting his time between KIT and the Arcadis office in Karlsruhe. While at Arcadis, he looked at groundwater characterization data from a Cr-contaminated site in Germany and used this data to plan lab experiments and to predict the stability of green rusts at typical Cr-contaminated sites. Also, at the end of the secondment, Andrew visited the Arcadis office in Zürich, Switzerland, presented his experimental results and received feedback from employees working on similar projects. He also toured the office’s lab facilities and advised some employees on their current projects.

ESR Virginia Alonso de Linaje: AECOM-> University of Copenhague/CRD (March-June 2018)

Virginia Alonso de Linaje spent 3 months at the University of Copenhagen. During her stay she characterized modified layered double hydroxides and developed batch experiments to determine their adsorption isotherms for different chlorinated hydrocarbons. In Copenhagen she also visited the Innovation Garage (Capital Region of Denmark). There, she placed some of the most promising synthesized solids in some wells in order to evaluate their stability under natural conditions.

ESR Virginia Alonso de Linaje: AECOM-> University of Salamanca (September-December 2017)

Virginia Alonso de Linaje spent 3 months at the University of Salamanca. During her stay, with the support of ERS Karen Dietmann and Prof. Vicente Rives, she synthesized different modified layered double hydroxides and characterized them with different techniques. She performed batch experiments regarding the stability of the solids under pilot test site groundwater and batch experiments to evaluate the reactivity of the solids with polluted groundwater from the site. ESR Andrew Thomas: KIT -> GFZ (July and November 2017)

During his secondment at GFZ, ESR Andrew Thomas received training in transmission electron microscopy and PHREEQC modelling software.  He also attended training courses and brought samples from his host institution to GFZ for analysis.  For more information and photos from Andrew's secondment, please click here.

ESR Tobias Linke: University of Iceland -> University of Copenhagen (May-June 2017)

Following the second Metal-Aid network event held in Copenhagen in May 2017, ESR Tobias Linke from University of Iceland spent one month on secondment at University of Copenhagen.  While in Denmark, Tobias had the opportunity to analyse samples he had brought from Iceland and to work with other fellows in the network.  For additional information about this secondment and for some photos, please click here.

ESR Flavia Digiacomo: Arcadis GmbH -> University of Copenhagen (July-August 2017)

Flavia Digiacomo from Arcadis GmbH spent six weeks at KU over the summer of 2017. During this period, she had the opportunity to work closely with other ESRs involved in the project and to gain useful information for her transport studies. Network Events

The Metal-Aid network is a TRAINING network.  As such, the network will offer each of the 14 Early Stage Researchers training in both scientific and soft skills.  Network-wide training events will be organised approximately every six months and information about the events will be posted here.

Fourth Metal-Aid network event and mid-term review: Giardini Naxos, Sicily

The Metal-Aid mid-term review took place on May 7 and 8, 2018 in Sicily.  The project officer, Stanka Miteva, and external reviewer, Sara Parodi, represented the European Commission.  An agenda for the mid-term review is available here.

Before the mid-term review, Metal-Aid ESRs received training in Legislation, regulations and patents (CS3).  They also participated in an innovation workshop and received feedback on their oral presentation skills.  After the mid-term review, the group assessed the current progress in the various work packages and future challenges to completing the Metal-Aid project.  Opportunities for various outreach activities at the upcoming meeting in Iceland in September 2018 were also discussed.

Third Metal-Aid network event: Kaprun, Austria

The third Metal-Aid network event entitled "Solid, fluid interface characterisation, scientific writing, confidentiality and intellectual property" took place in Kaprun, Austria from from November 26-December 1, 2017.  During this event, ESRs attended lectures in the following subjects:

- Volcanic eruptions and contamination of surface waters
- Redox conditions in aquifers
- High resolution diffraction and crystal structural fitting

Training was also provided in:

- Project management
- Research project assessment
- Confidentiality and intellectual property
- Scientific paper writing
- Careers in academia vs. careers in industry

During the training event, all of the work packages were re-visited to ensure that work is on target and several group dicussions were held to assess current progress and future challenges.

Second Metal-Aid network event: Copenhagen, Denmark

The second Metal-Aid network event entitled "Field methods and their applications, an industry perspective on the Metal-Aid project" took place in Denmark from May 14-19, 2017.  This event targeting field contamination delineation and site remediation technologies took place at the Innovation Garage of the Capital Region of Denmark where ESRs received training in soil sampling, gas sampling, infiltration tests and tracer injection. ESRs also performed soil and groundwater sampling and opened soil cores as part of the event. The Early Stage Researchers also attended 15 hours of lectures on: types and properties of organic contaminants, investigation methods for chlorinated solvents, properties and role of green rust, remediation techniques, health and safety aspects for work on contaminated sites, groundwater models, site contamination the industry perspective on the Metal-Aid research project and how to give a successful oral presentation.

First Metal-Aid network event: Madeira, Portugal

The first Metal-Aid network even took place in Madeira, Portugal from November 27-December 1, 2016.  This event combined the project kick off meeting with training in Research Skills 1 (Metal oxides:structure, reactivity, kinetics) and Complementary Skills 1 (Starting Research Projects).

As part of the Research Skills training, ESRs attended lectures on LDH and GR structure, composition and reactivity with contaminants, kinetics of fluid-solid interactions, mineral dissolution and precipitation rate laws and phase transformation and sorption processes.  As part of the complemetary skills training, ESRs were provided with information on key research, communication, personal and project management skills, Digital Media, Time Management & Organisation, Ethics and Effective Presentation Skills.

Short course in particle modelling: Turin, Italy: March 8 and 9, 2018

In the framework of the 6th ReGround meeting in Turin, organized by Politecnico di Torino, the Groundwater Engineering Research Group is pleased to announce the short course:​ ​
MNMs: A MODELLING TOOL FOR NANOPARTICLE TRANSPORT IN POROUS MEDIA​ March 7th- March 9th 2018

The course provides an insight into the mechanisms governing colloidal transport in saturated porous media under both constant and transient hydro-chemical conditions, with eventual clogging of the porous medium. Part of the course will be devoted to the practical use of MNMs 2018 (Micro- and Nanoparticle transport, filtration and clogging Model - Suite), a numerical tool for the analysis of laboratory tests of solute and nanoparticles transport and for the simulation of particle injection at pilot scale.

The course will start with an opening seminar on "Restoring aquifers contaminated by heavy metals using iron oxide nanoparticles: results and experiences from the H2020 REGROUND project" that will take place on the afternoon of March the 7th (14:00-16:00) at the venue: SITI-Sede operativa, Corso Castelfidardo 30/a, 10129 TO (A detailed program of the seminar will be given soon)
